This lake is a roughly two hour hike (3.3 miles and a 1400 foot elevation gain according to Green Trails). The drive is roughly 30 minutes north from Coles Corner off Highway 2 between Stephens Pass and Leavenworth. I mention it because the fall colors are peaking and there will not be many more nice days before the snows come. A patient told me about this hike after making the trip the weekend before last; I made the trip on Saturday on the way back from Wenatchee. Directions are simple: straight north from Coles Corner on Hwy 207 past Lake Wenatchee onto Forest Service Road 6500 (the sign will just say 65). Then onto the 6700 road and follow the signs.
The hike, I guess, would be considered moderately steep but it’s a great trail and beautiful all lthe way. There are not a lot of vistas but there is a lot of virgin forest with a great mix of the usually east side type trees (Pines, etc.) as well as west side types (Cedars, etc.). It rained on Friday so everything was wet and SLICK. There is one spot where a large log, about 30 feet long, crosses a creek. The log has saw marks along it, but if it is wet I recommend crossing the creek some other way – it’s too dangerous.
