Safety Training Follow Through: Bending & Lifting

In a recent study of  3,000 training managers it was found that 60% did not have a formal process for determining whether or not employees had actually applied their safety training to job duties. (In the context of proper bending and lifting techniques, supervisors and managers can simply notice – or they can screen employees, formally or informally.)

Only 23% of the training managers claimed that their managers sought follow-up programs and feedback to determine the effectiveness and application of employee training sessions. In the context of proper bending and lifting technique, effectiveness and application are self-evident; follow-up and feedback are built into screenings and daily practice of the screening movement.

The unfortunate truth: safety programs are endorsed at the beginning but then are rarely seen through to become successful in creating a safe, positive company culture. In the context of bending and lifting every employee who begins to bend and lift properly will appreciate the difference. They will appreciate an employer who cares enough to screen their technique and offer training – and they will feel the difference immediately!

One way to ensure that employees take safety training seriously and apply it to their jobs is to provide post-training reinforcement. In the context of bending and lifting reinforcement can be provided daily by supervisors and managers who notice good technique and offer opportunities to stretch and practice movement patterns. More and more companies offer employees the opportunity to practice their training daily at work while on the clock – they do not want to risk not getting the benefits of the training. Depending on how they structure these sessions the benefits can be multiplied across many different aspects of health and safety components simultaneously.

Musculoskeletal disorders remain the leading cause of workplace injury and illness in this country with the low back pain “epidemic” being the single largest cause of disability. Direct and indirect costs range from $100 and $200 Billion. Conventional medicine’s use of opioids, epidural steroid injections, and spine surgeries continues to increase in the face of research revealing their high cost and ineffectiveness. Over 80% of us will get low back pain. And yesterday’s Post was about the recurrence of low back pain.

It seems worth it to try to prevent lifting injuries to the low back. It seems reasonable to address measurable risk factors and invest a little time and effort given the scope of the consequences for not doing so.
