The words that work

We’re bad at empathy. As a result, when we’re arguing a point with someone, we tend to use words and images that work on us, not necessarily that help the other person.

So, if you want to understand how to persuade someone, listen to how they try to persuade you.

For example, one partner in a conversation might use concepts like power and tradition and authority to make a case, while the other might rely on science, statistics or fairness. One person might argue with tons of emotional insight, while someone else might bring up studies and peer reviews.

What they’re actually doing is talking about things in the way they like to hear them.

Finally, the media is saying it, and it is true…

Some would say that if the national, mainstream, media say it, it must be true.

Others would say that if the mainstream media said it, it can’t be true.

Well, there is a middle ground. Sometimes, some of what the mainstream media says is somewhat true. Rocking Chairs

It used to be the ill effects of sitting so much in older age was offset (a little at least) by the stimulation of rocking in a chair. Not so much any more.

Too bad. Sitting is not good for your brain! Here is the latest science to show what nowadays should go without saying (and usually does because we do not want to hear it:-).

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) & Dementia: Not Good News

This is not good news for those of us who played Rugby in college, or participated in boxing, or basketball, or any other violent sports.

But, like every other toxic exposure from our past, we can take measures. The body naturally heals: it is self-healing – given the opportunity and a healing environment.

The brain, of all things, is ‘plastic’ and can be molded. There are a dozen or more posts in this Blog regarding that. Physical, chemical, and mental. Keep it simple.

Get adjusted. Eat well. Exercise appropriately.

Nowadays life is more complex than in the past. Dealing with all of our exposures is an active exercise in the pursuit of health (detox is not just a buzz word).

Search this Blog and you will find much that can support you whether you are in Relief, Rehab, or Recovery mode. It is all about promoting health Рgetting on the path of health from where ever you are. Use it to your  benefit.

Strategy vs Tactics

Why even bother to think about strategy?

There’s confusion between tactics and strategy. It’s easy to get tied up in semantic knots as you work to figure out the distinction. It’s worth it, though, because strategy can save you when tactics fail.

If a tactic fails, you should consider abandoning it.

But that doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with your strategy. Your strategy is what you keep doing even after you walk away from a tactic.

A real estate broker could decide that her goal is to get more listings.

And her strategy is to achieve that by becoming the most trusted person in town.

There are then 100 tactics she can use to earn that trust. She can coordinate events, sponsor teams, host community meetings in her office, sponsor the local baseball team, be transparent about her earnings, hire countless summer interns at a fair wage, run seminars at the local library, etc. …

It doesn’t matter if one or two or five of the tactics aren’t home runs. They add up.

But if once, just once, she violates someone’s trust and expectations, the entire strategy goes out the window.

Tactics are disposable.

Strategy is for the long haul.

In patients with asthma, breathing exercises are known to help. But training patients in breathing techniques takes time and expertise, so it’s not often utilized to manage uncontrolled asthma.

A recent trial[1] compared two methods of breathing retraining: self-taught, using a video; or three face-to-face sessions with a respiratory therapist. The training focused on diaphragmatic breathing, nasal breathing, and slow breathing, as well as controlled breath holds and simple relaxation exercises.

Compared with usual care, both methods of breathing retraining improved asthma-related quality of life. Although the interventions didn’t change measures of airway inflammation or obstruction, patients reported increased control over breathing and reduced need for medication. They also felt more relaxed.

So, for your patients struggling with their asthma, consider adding breathing retraining to their treatment. Even patients who don’t have easy access to respiratory therapists can benefit from the self-taught video training. It’s a simple, low-cost option.”

The emphasis above is mine: this is all taught in your first tai chi class, and constantly repeated, and re-enforced, throughout each and every tai chi class. Most people, asthmatics or not, will benefit from learning diaphragmatic breathing, through the nose in a mindful way that produces relaxation.
